Before heading to Tibet, we tested our approach and sampling methods in a lake of the Swiss Alps,
the first results have been published, showing pros and cons on sequencing approach for microbial ecology in lake sediments. Article accessible here

Oral and poster presentations at EGU 2026, Vienna, Austria
Several members of the DIGESTED research team presented their first results during oral presentations in the limnogeology and scientific drilling sessions. There were also numerous posters from the broader NamCore team, including colleagues from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research.
We also held a meeting with all NamCore members to exchange on those results and plan future analyses and collaborations.

Final Core Opening and sampling party in Beijing, in may 2025
Internationa Association of Limnology and International Paleolimnology Association conference, Aix-les-Bains, France, in october 2025
The first sampling event occured near Beijing, at the Huairou Science city, Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP). During this episode, our co-PI Torsten Haberzettl, among others, was interviewed and a movie was produced by our chinese colleagues of ITP. It shows the goals and reasoning behing heading to Nam Co, and all the work that is being done to monitor the lake. You can watch it below.
Video produced by Zhao Lijun, presented by the Center for Europe and Africa (China Today) and the Publicity Department of the CPC Xizang Antonomous Region Committee (also called Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee of the Chinese Communist Party)
For the first time since the beginning of the project, we presented preliminary results of the Digested project at an international conference. Aliisa Laakkonen presented the first results on diagenetic minerals formation in the shallow gravity cores in a oral presentation, while Torsten Haberzettl, Giulia Ceriotti, Marie-Luise Adolph and Camille Thomas presented results from the biogeochemistry, sedimentary context and microbial ecology of the deep core. We were joined by Junbo Wang, Jianting Ju and Liping Zhu from the Institute of the Tibetan Plateau Research.

ICDP video of project NamCore
Video produced by ICDP and created by Curtis Li, showing the ICDP drilling operations at Nam Co, Tibet.
Core Opening Party in Beijing
Aliisa Laakkonen handled the University of Bern Geology Instagram account during our core opening party in Beijing. You can view the summary of all stories (a mix of mud, food and sightseeing!) by clicking on the image below.
Articles in PAGES Magazine
Two articles were published in the Past Global Changes Magazine dedicated to "Achievements of Scientific Drilling in Paleosciences".
